Cyber-Bullying

Young people today are using the internet more than ever. They view the internet and even more so the mobile phones as positive aspects of our society. The internet and mobile phones systems are the two biggest systems of communication which play a crucial role in our daily activities and development of identities. On the other hand, these same technologies are also often used negatively. Many children are the targets of bullying via the internet or mobile phones resulting in total confusion on the part of the "target". Very often, children are not able to understand that what they are going through is a form of bullying. As a result the previously safe environment of the internet is now becoming a source of confusion and anxiety.
There is a lot of history and background on cyber bullying since it has been around for a very long time. Cyber bullying takes place when people use technology in order to harm others. “The terms cyberbullying and cyberbully are attributed to Canadian educator Bill Belsey, founder and president of the Bullying.org Canada Incorporated, and leader of anti-bullying efforts” (cyberbullying). This cyberbullying has been affecting people for a very long time and can hurt people aging from young teens all the way to adults. “Methods of cyberbullying can include: threats; sexual harassment; spreading lies; impersonation in order to post materials to damage a reputation, destroy relationships, or cause other trouble; making someone the subject of ridicule or scorn in discussion forums, chat rooms or websites; the posting of compromising photos taken without the victim’s knowledge or permission, or the editing of photos to embarrass or impugn, such as pasting the victim’s face on a nude body; and developing a person’s confidence in order to trick him or her into divulging secrets or embarrassing information.” (cyberbullying). All of these methods are examples of what is currently taking place in today’s society.
There are many causes for Cyberbullying to occur. One cause of cyberbullying is when students use technology to harm others. When the students use the computer they may use it to harm another student in which this results in cyberbullying (Cyberbullying). Another cause of cyberbullying is cyberbullying because of drama. One student might be mad about something that happened during school and use this to get revenge on the other kid which is cyberbullying. These causes need to be prevented as more and more cyberbullying takes place and leads to some terrible effects on people
Cyberbullying can result in many different effects and some of these effects can be absolutely devastating. One effect of cyberbullying is kids might commit suicide as a result of being bullied. This exact case happened to Jamey Rodemeyer as he was constantly bullied and finally took it upon himself to commit suicide. This is only one of the thousands of suicides that take place because of cyberbullying. Obviously, effects like this show that cyberbullying must be put to an end (Boyd). Next, cyberbullying can result in the effect of emotional pain. As students take in the fact that they are being bullied it causes very much emotional pain to them. These effects shouldn’t take place at all and the only way for that to happen is if cyberbullying is brought to an end.
Many things are being done as more and more cyberbullying rises and harsher tactics to stop it are being used as it continues. One way the cyberbullying is being stopped is schools are holding assemblies to show the students the harsh truth and reality of how bad it is. This will make the children feel guilty for what they have done and make them stop doing this terrible act (Hinduja). Moreover, law enforcement is acting on some of the more serious problems with cyberbullying. Almost any kid is terrified when the police are involved which will help minimize cyberbullying. Lastly, a law which was established in New Jersey in order to prevent breakouts of cyberbullying. All states need to support by making laws like these to get rid of cyberbullying (Hinduja). In order to stop this students must report any time they see cyberbullying to an adult. Instead of hiding it they must report it, because the consequences could be terrible (Mckenna). Also the government is trying to put a stop to cyberbullying. A law in New Jersey was made in order to prevent breakouts of cyberbullying (Verbruggen).
I believe that the best solution would be that the parents watch over their children for many different reasons. The first reason why the parents watching over their children would be the best solution to cyberbullying is because the parents understand their child more than anyone. Parents are almost always with their children and can always tell if their child is sad or not feeling okay. Another reason why parents need to watch over their children is because they are closest to their children. The parents can fully understand their child, unlike teachers who don’t know the children as much. A final reason why parents watching over their children is the best solution to cyberbullyinhg is the parents are always with the children to support them. Almost all parents are with their children most of the day and can always be there to help.
Parents, law enforcement and educators all need to take caution with watching over children in order to prevent cyberbullying. If everyone comes together including educators, law enforcement and the biggest role, the parents, then cyberbulling can be stopped. The next time these 12 to 17 year olds log onto the internet, maybe they wont be affected by cyber bullying if everyone begins to work together.
